Unravelling the history of Earth and Humans

Know your planet within 5 minutes.

The GaiaSapiens

In Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of the Earth and is one of the Greek aboriginal deities. Gaia is considered an ancestral mother of all life: the primal Mother Earth goddess. Homo sapiens is the only extant human species. It is a Latin name for 'wise man' and given by Carl Linnaeus.

TheGaiaSapiens is an endeavor to express an invaluable relation of humans with Mother Earth. Commandeering the title of Wise Man amongst all the human species that ever appeared on the Earth, it is our responsibility to understand the functioning and essence of securing her. To understand such aspects of our planet, no field of sciences other than Geology can be of much use.

TheGaiaSapiens is more than an educational blog. It is an expression of responsibility that we feel in making a general audience comfortable with several ideas of the field in easy words. This blogging site will, no doubt, be very helpful to the students of geological background as well as a non-geological background in their preparation for various competitive exams and the development of interesting insights of the Earth Science.

TheGaiaSapiens will try to uncover the geological features of India and then of the world.

  • Earth orbits around the Sun in 365.25 days. 0.25 days add to form 1 day after 4 years resulting in the leap year.

  • Earth completes its rotation about its axis in 23 hours 56 minutes, defining days and nights.

  • Earth's axis of rotation is 23.5 degrees inclined from the normal to the elliptical equatorial plane of planets, giving rise to the seasons on the planet.

  • On two days of the year- Equinoxes, both the hemisphere is equally illuminated by the Sun.

  • Whichever hemisphere is close to the Sun experiences summer, while the one away from the Sun experiences winter.

  • The reason why India and Australia experience complete different season is due to the inclination of Earth about its axis.

Geology, or geoscience, is the study of The Earth. This branch of science address questions of multifaceted dimensions. From the formation and composition of our planet, the cause of earthquakes and ice ages, the evolution of life and how conditions on Earth changed over the span of 4.57 Ga. It also addresses practical problems such as how to keep pollution out of groundwater, how to find oil and minerals, and how to avoid landslides. It has remarkable contributions to the study of global climatic changes. Ever wondered who is the scientist who reports about an Earthquake that hit in the Uttrakhand or about the possible landslide that will threaten the city or contamination of groundwater in the region or the limited amount of oil. The scientists are called Geologists.

Without being aware of the subject, this subject guides and emphasizes great role on the daily lifestyle of inhabitants in a region. Ever wondered why are their abundant resources in Jharkhand, Orissa etc but not in that abundance at other places of the country. Ever thought why you cannot wear the same dress or eat the same food as the person who is living in the Himalayan region. Many wars have been fought because of this subject. This might help you in understanding "Why Kashmir is the heaven?". From the past to present human civilization accomplishments and consequences are in a broader context steered by geology.

Study of geology reveals Earth's preciousness. What our ancestors considered as the centre of the Universe has becomes, with the development of a geologic perspective, one of many islands in space today. Study of geology has revealed that Earth is older than humanity which was once considered to originate at the same time as humanity.

Geology helps in answering, When did the Earth form and how? Why do volcanoes erupt, earthquake, flood and landslides occur? Are mountains standing still? Was the Earth the same throughout as we find it today? Do climate and life forms change with time? Does sea-level changes? Do continents move? Where will we find oil and mineral or resources?
